Course Synopsis:
1. Mandate of the UK National Preventive Mechanism: The National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) describes the network of independent statutory bodies that have responsibility for preventing ill-treatment of people    in detention in the UK. This workshop will expatiate on the aims of the NPM with regards to the prevention of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. An overview of the mandate of the NPM will be provided with respect to the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT).

2. An Overview of the UK PACE 1984: The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (UK PACE 1984) sets out to strike the right balance between the powers of the police and the rights of suspects. This section will aim at providing an overview of the UK PACE 1984 and the accompanying PACE codes of practice.
