Course synopsis:
Human rights have been given considerable importance in the Indian Constitution through the chapter on Fundamental Rights. The importance of fundamental rights has been often misunderstood by the State which has been trying to curtail or limit its application and this has met with resistance from the Supreme Court. The right to life and liberty has been given considerable significance by the Supreme Court and a few cases will be discussed in this context.  Reference will also be made to the basic structure doctrine that has evolved in India.
