Mrs Sulakshna Beekarry-Sunassee, Ag Assistant Parliamentary Counsel

Mrs. Sulakshna Beekarry-Sunassee currently holds the post of Acting Assistant Parliamentary Counsel at the Attorney General’s Office. She was called to the Bar in 2002 and she holds an LLB from the London School of Economics and  Political Science and an LLM in Commercial Law from King’s College, Cambridge. She served as Vice Chairperson for the Assessment Review Committee for a short period in 2009/2010. Recent cases in which she appeared include the maritime piracy appeal before the Supreme Court in 2015 and the L’Amicale appeal before the Privy Council in March 2017. She has published in the field of international law and piracy in India and in the US ( Case Western University Law Journal), and on the duties of the prosecutor in the IJLS Journal.

Course description:
The course proposes to look at the role and responsibilities of law officers, the Attorney General and the Solicitor General  and how their legal, governmental and constitutional functions developed . The course will also focus on the evolution and modern development of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Accountability , ethics and the duty of law officers to the Court will also be looked at.
