Mr Marc Hein SC, G.O.S.K., founder and Chairperson of Juristconsult Chambers is a graduate of Gray’s Inn School of Law in London. Mr. Hein started practising law in 1980 at the Chambers of Sir Raymond Hein, Q.C. joining then a practice dating since 1927. He was also Chairman of the Mauritius Bar Council in 1992 and established Juristconsult in 1989 which has been thriving since, as a leading business law firm.

Amongst his various endeavours in both the legal and business world, Marc Hein is currently the Editor of the Mauritius Business Law Review. In 2013, on the occasion of the National Day, Marc Hein has been awarded the title of ‘Grand Officer of the Order of the Star & Key of the Indian Ocean’ (‘GOSK’) for his contribution to the legal and financial sectors. Marc Hein is consistently rated as a “leading lawyer” in IFLR1000 (Financial and Corporate) and IFLR1000 (Energy & Infrastructure).

Mr Marc Hein has been elevated to the rank of Senior Counsel (SC) on 24 August 2016. This title is granted by Her Excellency the President of the Republic upon the recommendation of His Lordship the Chief Justice. The title rewards his long career and contribution to the legal profession nationally and internationally. Furthermore, he was rated by one specialised publication as the “Leader of one of the most respected law firms in Mauritius”, Marc Hein has acquired substantial expertise and experience in all aspects of the Practice of law whilst specialising in business law, including corporate, commercial, tax, mining, insolvency, and employment law.

Ms Johanne Hague is a Partner at the firm and currently heads the firm’s Tax practice. She was admitted by the Law Society of England and Wales as a solicitor of England and Wales in September 2007, after completing her Diploma in Legal Practice Course at BPP Law School in London and her training contract. She was called to the Bar of England and Wales in November 2016 and to the Bar of Mauritius in September 2017. Johanne holds an LLB in English and French Law, having graduated with first class honours at King’s College London. She also holds a “Maîtrise en droits français et anglais” (Mention Bien) from the Université of Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne.

Prior to joining Juristconsult Chambers, she worked for three years at the London offices of JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A, as an in-house tax lawyer. Between 2005 and 2010, she was a trainee solicitor and a Tax solicitor at Linklaters LLP, working in its London and Dubai offices.

Johanne’s practice areas cover various aspects of corporate, banking and commercial law, with particular focus on tax. She has considerable experience on tax legislation in the UK and Mauritius as well as a number of emerging markets in the EMEA region (Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa).


Course Description:

This course is designed to give transactional lawyers an overview of tax issues commonly encountered in corporate and banking deals, on both domestic and cross-border transactions. The course will also address the relevance of double tax treaties and the recent Base Erosion Profit Shifting (BEPS) proposals in structuring transactions and will highlight important considerations when drafting deal documentation.
